Description
This is a very nice large piece of Italian Alabaster. Some people refer to it as White Pipestone. This material has some translucent qualities to it which really can make the finished product look cool. Italian Alabaster will work to make pipes out of, but it doesn’t hold up great to heat for extended or regular use. We like to use this stone mostly for making Spirit Animals and Effigies. That being said, it can be used for pipes and we do occasionally use it for pipes if a customer insists on it. We recommend they use it for special occasional only.
This piece measures 8-1/2″ wide at it’s most and it is 5″ tall. The stone is 2″ thick.
This white pipestone is softer than any of the other materials that we like to use for pipes. It’s more difficult to add really fine detail simply because of the softness of the stone. For ex: If you were to use white stone to make a buffalo pipe, I wouldn’t advise you to make detailed horns on the buffalo.
This is the only type of stone that we don’t melt beeswax on to finish it up. Beeswax seems to take away the translucent qualities so instead, we will work a light oil into it. Your pipe or effigy will be a bright white color after you’ve sanded, oiled, and polished it up.
